Episode 48 - Susan Sneath: Lighten the Load-A Humour Attitude Works!

Recorded LIVE on November 7, 2022

"If I am not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don't want to go there." Martin Luther.

It takes a community to raise consciousness.

The Change Zone introduces episode #48 with a smile: “Susan Sneath: Lighten the Load-A Humour Attitude Works!”

In this time of wondering, worrying, wandering and warrioring for a new sensibility about home and place in challenging times, we can use, quiet spaces to take a breather - little refuges from the intense winds of calamity, where we ponder more reflective questions.

Questions like:” What could possibly bring a smile to my lips?”

The ability to smile holds the key to healing humour, this is key to healing humour, the kind of humour attitude Susan has dedicated herself to archiving, cultivating, elevating, instilling in herself and all those she comes into contact with. A humour attitude can include multiple sorts: of humour: Exaggeration, irony, verbal, visual, auditory, physical, healing, you-had-to-be-there, and magic? Which does she prefer? Those who know her, know her response – “All of them please, all of them, from a subtle smile to a belly laugh - that-brings-tears-to-my eyes-and a snort-to-my-nose!!”

    Who is Susan Sneath?
    (aka the Halloween Lemur)

As you know by now, Susan Sneath is really very quiet and subdued…when she sleeps! When she’s awake she takes the business of humour very seriously – she loves to laugh.

A Healing Humour Attitude is the kind she devotes herself to, because it helps us all remember that life is never quite as serious as we might suppose and yet more precious than we ever dare take for granted for an instant.

Points covered in this episode – seriously!

How putting a humor attitude to work in our lives can mean to…

1 - Be open-minded, playful and/or to create an atmosphere that brings a smile to your lips and releases tension
    2 - Make someone’s day
3 - Be a productive, resourceful leader, present for yourself and others
4 - Proactively choose your attitude and style of communication

As the saying goes: “Remember If you can find humour in anything, you can survive it.”

  • Head shot of Kathryn Zukof

Episode 50 - Rethink & Retell Our Stories with Kathryn Zukof!

Recorded LIVE on November 21, 2022

Kathryn Zukof is a thinker, a planner, and all about action as she helps folks through The Hard and Soft Sides of Change Management (she wrote the book on that!) She also takes her own advice. Always on the lookout for small learning bytes and actionable items, she has become a fan of The Change Zone and our diverse speakers help her think in new ways. There’s a saying “The stories we tell are how we live our lives. When we are in the middle of change it is essential to change the stories we tell, the stories we live!” Kathy takes this on and shares her insights, wit, and wisdom as she delves into and celebrates the changing projects, passages, and stories in her life.

Kathryn Zukof is an author, consultant and educator, whose work focuses on strategies and tactics for making productive change – in the workplace and personally. For over 30 years, Kathryn worked as a Learning and Organizations Development practitioner in industries ranging from manufacturing to higher education to technology services. Kathryn has helped organizations create and implement innovative approaches to leadership development and succession management, foster an environment of continuous learning, and plan and navigate through transformation change. She loves mining for new ideas from diverse sources – health and wellness, neuropsychology, business, the military – and applying concepts from one area to another to create something entirely new. She’s also fascinated by the idea of polarities. How do you achieve the “both-and” while addressing seemingly opposite and competing forces? How can you integrate both the hard and soft sides of change management? How can you achieve both productivity and learning? How can you eat a healthy diet while still getting to enjoy chocolate and bagels?

Most recently, Kathryn has been working on some writing projects including essays on a range of topics: life inside an HR department; the power of storytelling and revising our stories; the wisdom that can be found in the rosemary plant she’s growing on her front steps.

Kathryn has a PhD in Social Psychology and an MBA in Marketing. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Research Methods, and Marketing. Before transitioning to a career in Learning and Organizational Development, Kathryn held management roles in client relations, product development and marketing in the technology services sector.

Kathryn is the author of “The Hard and Soft Sides of Change Management: Tools for Managing Process and People”, available through Amazon.com. You can connect with her on LinkedIn.

Episode 52 - The Power Between: Relationships by Design with Dan Ohler & Carol Ohler

Recorded LIVE on Dec 5th, 2022

Life is about Relationships, don't you think? The fact is: your quality of life (personal and professional) is totally dependent on the quality of the relationships you create. However, we are living in stressful times, filled with fast-paced schedules, financial pressures, emotional disruption, physical ailments, and relational incivility. It can be too easy to feel victimized and fall into a "normal" quality of life. And yet who wants "normal"?

The Change Zone brings episode #52 “The Power Between: Relationships by Design with Dan Ohler & Carol Ohler!” Dan and Carol, 2 certified coaches, sparkle and listen, one on one and as a team. They help folks to prioritize their relationship with their partner/spouse, to consciously design it, and make it the way they want it, rather than accepting what comes along by default.

Their solution-based, forward-moving coaching process supports you to create your own best steps. As accountability partners, they ensure you, and your partner, stay on your "good" path and remember to celebrate your genius and excellence.

Who are Dan and Carol Ohler?

Married for almost 39 years, Carol and Dan bring not only a wealth of formal education and training, they share with you the school of hard-knocks, tried, and tested, been-there-done-that strategies that make a relationship work. They’ve experienced the guck (and lots of it), but through vulnerability, dedication, and the hard work of changing themselves, they now experience an ever-growing love, as a team. They know that a high-quality life is dependent upon high-quality relationships, and they are passionate about helping others to proactively create relationship success. For over 25 years, they have been supporting couples to thrive through weekend workshops, two-on-two coaching, and exclusive two-on-two retreats. They live in a secluded rural “paradise” near Sangudo, west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They are authentic, humble, and share love and fun wherever they go.

    Episode 53 - That’s What Friends Do

Recorded LIVE on Dec 12, 2022

    That’s What Friends Do!

They hold space for each other – space for silliness, doldrums, reaching out for a hand up, to hang in there, and a hug. They give each other a hand to paint that room, get into some shenanigans and laugh, or cry, or laugh till you cry, cry till you laugh together!

Space to be still and silent without asking “How did you come to be here?” In this space Friends listen, converse, and share the investigation of the territory of the heart. Because they can.

And yet as Gilles Dahan commented once in social media, I can know you without knowing you!

How do you folks define ‘Friend’ as opposed to acquaintance?

  • EUGENA WOLF MAGUIRE sitting in a red chair with a purple hat on an old front porch

Episode 54 - Honour the Dark – Down & Under, Up & Out with Eugena Wolf Maguire!

Recorded LIVE on December 19, 2022

Eugena Wolf Maguire is playful and bold. She dares to look into the eyes and hearts of our struggles and darkness and find within the hope needed in our darkest hours. Along the way she celebrates this journey!

How does she do this? Step by step. She connects people to themselves, the arts and community.

Eugena Maguire is an event curator, a social worker, former “struggling” foster parent and creator of the Parenting Human Beings (PHB) podcast. Limping into adulthood and trying to make sense of her own childhood and mother’s suicide, Eugena fatefully stumbled upon the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld, among others. She was deeply inspired, which brought her into her current role as helper, healer, facilitator, and curious journey companion to parents, educators and any adults who care about kids. Through years of deep inner work and play, hitting the books, and healing, Eugena has discovered what drives us as human beings: our need for connection. She routinely gathers artists, poets, and storytellers for events - odes to both the struggle and the hope we need in our darkest hours. One of her pet projects coming up in January 2023 for example, is an online event: ‘Blue Monday’, It’s known as the most depressing day of the year. It's dark, it's cold and the credit card bills from holiday spending are arriving! And yet - through powerful and inspiring performances, Eugena honours the melancholy and welcomes the new year with some optimism and anticipation.

    Who is Eugena Wolf Maguire?

Eugena is currently completing her Master of Social Work degree and is an intern counsellor at ASK Therapy for moms. Eugena is deeply spiritually inclined and has been studying and practicing shamanism since 2010. She lives with her wife on a farm named Avant Gardens in rural Leduc County, Alberta, Canada.

Eugena is passionate about play and the arts and performs poetry under the moniker Cracker with Gratitude. Straight ‘outta’ everywhere, her dorky, divine and *sometimes* rhyming poetry is bound to transport listeners to another dimension. The ultimate Wise Cracker, Eugena Maguire, has been told that she has “a little elder living inside of her.”

As she notes: “Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her.”

  • Head shot of Jim Burke

Episode 61 - The Liminal Fortune Cookie with Jim Burke!

Recorded LIVE on February 20th, 2023

“My boat struck something deep. Nothing happened. Sound, silence, waves. Nothing happened? Or perhaps, everything happened and I’m sitting in the middle of my new life.” (Juan Ramon Jiminez).
TheChangeZone has an odyssey in store for you with episode #61 “The Liminal Fortune Cookie with Jim Burke!” Where and when does the boat sail? On Monday February 20 noon MST, 2 PM ET with Susan Sneath and Gail McDonald.

Context please, let’s start with ‘liminal’: the place a person is in during a transitional period. Enter our worthy guide Jim Burke: he’s a foresight and solutions navigator, transforming ways that people and businesses can intentionally speculate, identify, and apply insights for the future. He delves underneath to basic themes: limits motivate creativity; expectations are resentments under construction; the hero’s journey, (being scared is part of the game); and the connections between spirituality and uncertainty.
As Malcolm Daubney once asked ”Does change always = or have to involve creativity?”
Jim responded ”It depends how you look at the power of the universe.”
Buckle up - humour, the Serenity Prayer and kindliness will be  invaluable companions as we dare to travel into the wild blue yonder!

    Who is Jim Burke?

Jim Burke is the Founder and Foresight and #solutions Navigator at DeepDive Foresight.
The past: He has had multiple careers involving decades of experience in foresight, early warning analysis, long-range planning, organizational development, change management, and innovation, including an active Air Force military career.
The future: Jim is going through yet-another career transition, finding himself in the liminal spaces, seemingly headed towards becoming a writer, whatever that entails. Currently, he is working on a book about foresight and product portfolio management, engaged in a case study of innovation in a small company, and looking at the #connections of #spirituality and #uncertainty. The first and third efforts involve collaboration with folks much smarter than he, which has been a consistent practice during his multiple #careers.

  • Headshot of Chris Hartstein

Episode 66 - Healed People Heal People with Chris Hartstein!

Recorded LIVE on March 27, 2023

Chris is a certified life coach, professional organizer, and practitioner of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), who dreams of a day when empathy skills flourish to support our children and end senseless violence. When she discovered NVC in 2013, Chris was moved by its simplicity and depth.  One 3-hour workshop changed an ‘enemy image ‘of her teenage daughter into compassionate understanding. As a volunteer at Lilly May Carrol Jackson, a girls’ middle school in Baltimore City, Chris dealt with students' emotional upsets and conflicts by listening for feelings and needs. She began an after school sewing group to have connected conversations with a small group of students. Chris hopes to raise awareness of the NVC learning community with her children’s book, An Inside Story: A Children’s Book for Grown -Ups Too! which was inspired by her daughter and the girls of Lilly May Carroll Jackson School.

KZ - Grandmother Of Two –

“Using very simple language and images, this book helps children ... and adults too ... understand how thoughts, emotions and physical sensations are driven by needs that we all share. More importantly, the book provides guidance on what to do to move forward despite the scariness and ickiness we might sometimes experience. I can't wait to share this book with my young grandsons and will be sure to use the practice page and discussion questions to help them really connect with the book's lessons.”

    Who is Chris Harstein?

Chris uses her training as a certified life coach, a practitioner of Nonviolent Communication, and extensive creative materials to facilitate parenting classes with refugees, conduct online empathy groups and support other NVC trainers through her work with Capital NVC.

She wrote and illustrated her children’s book,(available on Amazon) to grow awareness of the practices of the NVC learning community which helped her transform her parenting and increased her inner peace.

As Chris notes: “On the inside all people are more alike than different!”

She also enjoys creating content on Instagram
