Episode 25 - Change Is A Contact Sport

Recorded LIVE on April 26, 2022

In episode #25 “Change is a Contact Sport”, Gail McDonald - Change Optimizer/Relationship Architect and Susan Sneath - Story Architect/Social Pioneer, see “Change” as a game or sport that we can choose to be engaged in. In the midst of change you’re bound to bump into things, each other and yourself! That’s part of the game. Come as you are.

It's an engaging hands-on game that takes physical exertion, and skill. If you’re feeling stuck and wary of the change before you, we’ll take you thru trustworthy systems that allow all of us to be comfortable with uncertainty even though the 6 losses are often present (attachment, turf, structure, future, meaning and control). We can still dare to show up and choose to be present while we venture, stride or saunter into areas that are unknown, unclear, unexplored, and unexpressed.

This is what The Change Zone does. In this episode we are all about supporting the changes we are experiencing and finding ways to fit things back together again in peace, beauty and harmony.

About “Change is a Contact Sport”

The "Infinite Game of Life" is a hands-on process. The following 3 dedications from books new and old in Susan Sneath’s library, illustrate 3 keystone practices. Mistakes -"there is a story about an intellectual who felt he could learn everything from books. He read about the stars and became an astronomer, he read about history and became an historian, he read about swimming and drowned." (Healing into Life and Death by Stephen Levine). Leadership - "For Sophie, who has half my DNA but twice my brains" (Content DNA by John Espirian) and Legacy - "Dear Grandma, Because you lived as if there was no finish line. May we all learn to live such an infinite life. Love Simon" (The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek). In The Change Zone we support leaders of all shapes and sizes to bring their/our creative visions to life in this everyday world. We bring Trust as a player in this "Infinite Game" of no winners, no losers. Trust in ourselves and others because it's fulfilling and fun to contribute to something bigger than ourselves, something with value that will last well beyond our lifetimes.
Trust that when we make time to connect with ourselves and our community with no strings attached, magic enters. As Nola Simon is fond of saying "The Magic is in the action.”

    Episode 26 - You've Got Quirks – And You're Wonderful!

Recorded LIVE on May 2, 2022

Due to technical challenges, our call in guest was not recorded for the entirety of the show. We apologize for the quirks, it was a wonderful show.

In episode #26 “You’ve got Quirks – and You’re Wonderful!” The Change Zone invites international speaker and 9-time award-winning author Kristin A. Sherry into play. “The more you know yourself, the less you rely on others to tell you who you are” Kristin notes with a smile. This book really boils down to one word and that word is Belonging. Belonging is a basic human need and stories help us feel like we are understood and that we belong. There’s always a universal truth to stories that are powerful. The universal truth of this book (there’s more than one) is that there’s a place for everyone.

You’ve got Quirks and You’re Wonderful” tells the true stories of people who were “different” as children. Other kids and some adults didn’t understand them and teased them. At the time our quirky heroes felt embarrassed and powerless but living with quirks taught them valuable lessons they now share with you. Susan Sneath asserts “I couldn’t resist purchasing this book in part, because I know some of the people in this book, Nola Simon (of episode #10 Stir Things Up!) for example! She and other folks have moved into powerful lives that are inspiring. I bought multiple copies and passed them out in my community, and it has become a game changer with everyone who shares it.”

We’ll be talking about the power of stories, of leaders who come in all shapes, ages, and sizes, of learning opportunities and the fun of spontaneity and surprises which leads to building bridges in our communities. Imagine if every child could not only learn to love who they are but feel courageous to tackle life's obstacles.
If we don't accept and love ourselves, we won't feel courageous to tackle obstacles or stand up for ourselves. Our life experiences will wildly differ from those who are able to grasp this. We can all learn from the courageous real-life examples of others. Our attitude determines our altitude!

  • Anne at the beach smiling with sunglasses on, flowers in her hair and a "be kind" t-shirt on.

Episode 28 - Say Yes, Show Up & Be Present!

Recorded LIVE on May 23, 2022

In episode #28 “Say Yes, Show Up, and Be Present!” Gail McDonald and Susan Sneath welcome “Connector of People and Things Maximizer!” - Anne Nevel, into The Change Zone. She has got stories to tell! There are three themes running though our show:

    1. How stories connect us.

2.How we change because of our stories and

    3. How our quirkiness can come to serve the world!

    Who’s Anne Nevel?

She’s kind, quirky, knows how to say no, and is also a shining example of saying yes, showing up and being present. Anne authentically uses her many gifts and quirks to serve others in every way imaginable. The Change Zone is delighted to create community with Anne, one connection, one story, one change at a time.

“Your stories don’t define you. How you tell them will.” (Sarah Elkins). Anne Nevel has the stories to prove it!

Anne is our next guest on The Change Zone May 23 …” Say Yes, Show Up and Be Present!”

Anne is so much more than a short bio, and more complex than a business summary.

Whether working at her day job, volunteering with organizations she cares about, maintaining side ventures, or serving as a good friend or family member – she aims to create reliable, safe spaces for others to feel free to be themselves.

Anne has held a variety of positions in various industries. Over the last 16 years, in her role in the association space, she has overseen educational activities in several different industries, primarily within trades and healthcare (her favorite was the helicopter industry). Currently, she is the Vice President of Education for the Healthcare Distribution Alliance.

She is fired up by connections…connections of all types. When she talks about people or projects, she sees connections. Her combination of strengths is what drives her desire to connect the right people to each other and to the right projects. She leads with confidence in her instincts in terms of the best opportunities for individuals to truly shine in their own talents, for themselves and for the greater good. The reason people feel good around her is that she truly SEES them and knows what they need to be successful. She then presents her vision of them with so much confidence and leadership they can’t help but believe her – this makes her good at getting people to do things they otherwise are unlikely to do. 😊

As her story continues to unfold, she looks forward to determining how she can best use her gifts and quirks to serve others.

Episode 30 - Embodying Change is a Contact Sport

Recorded LIVE on June 13, 2022

“Embodying change” is a ‘come as you are’ game. Grab your courage and join us in The Change Zone as we stumble, tumble or stride into embodying the change and resources that are always right there before us!

During change you’re bound to bump into things, each other, and yourself! That’s part of the game.

In The Change Zone episode 30 “Embodying Change is a Contact Sport”, Gail McDonald - Change Optimizer/Relationship Architect and Susan Sneath - Story Architect/Social Pioneer play with themes and questions that run through our adventures in The Change Zone and this episode:

Embodying change and choosing to re-frame our successes or failures builds self-acceptance and community.

There’s always a universal truth to stories that are powerful, and one universal truth is “There’s a place for everyone.” There’s a place for our quirkiness - the world needs it! What is the story you are living right now?

“What resource is right in front of you, right now that you may not be seeing?” Finding and using the resources at hand can be surprising, fun, and life changing.

In The Change Zone we support leaders of all shapes and sizes who embody change, who try, who dare to bring their/our creative visions to life in this everyday world.

We bring trust as a player in this "Infinite Game" of no winners, no losers. Trust in ourselves and others because it's fulfilling and fun to contribute to something bigger than ourselves, a legacy lasting well beyond our lifetimes.
Trust that when we make time to connect with ourselves and our community with no strings attached, magic enters. As Nola Simon is fond of saying "The Magic is in the action.”

When we “try”, the game gets going. As Kathryn Zukof commented recently after viewing episode 29 (The Resources are always right there!) with Gerry Potter - “My new quote of the day, Yoda was wrong. There is only try.”

Recorded LIVE on June 20, 2022

In Episode 31 The Change Zone welcomes back Katie Hudson, creative and professional organizer (Tidy Katie) for a fun return visit. In this episode Katie plays with the themes and questions that came up in the organizational challenges that Gail and Susan took on.

    1. She’ll give us friendly, fun, and creative feedback as we tell the tales of searching for our unique style of organization, to find places to put things that were easier to use and easier to access.

    2. As part of our process we reached out to our community. We shared where we were and that we didn’t know (ambiguity) where we would end up! We have before and after pictures!

    3. We’ll use organization of personal space as a metaphor for our inner space as well.

  • circles of characteristics over lapping. Is it Possible to be... 2 opposite characteristics at the same time

Episode 32 - Can You Be Both? – The Agency of Choice!

Recorded LIVE on June 27, 2022

Can you be smiling and struggling, vulnerable and flawed, capable and lost for example?

We asked this question in our last episode #31 Tidy Katie Returns to our Neighborhood. We asked this of our guest Katie Hudson as she heads into baby number 2, and Gail McDonald and Susan Sneath asked ourselves questions like these while we took on an organizational challenge Katie set us. We also repeatedly ask these questions of ourselves as we continue to create the community that embodies change, one conversation, one question, one story at a time.

Life is quite the balancing act, whether we are looking to be our best or make the best of the challenge or kitchen sink that life flung our way!

How do we react or respond to the possibilities life hands us?

    • We’ll sort through 3 guiding principles of leadership

    • The power of the stories old and new that we and others have lived and loved through challenging times.

    • Ways to hold a space for change, moment by moment, day by day

We have the agency of choice that can put us in the leadership seat on The Judgement Train!

Gail McDonald and Susan Sneath are committed to act on the stories we tell, to deliver the stories we live, the stories we’ll laugh about later!

That’s what we do to Embody Change in Community with a Destiny Mindset, moving past and through that destination mindset.

Join this community that embodies change on The Change Zone, one conversation, one story at a time. Everyone is welcome in The Change Zone!

  • Two green darts on a dart board in the very centre

Episode 33 - Double Dart: Are You Hitting the Bullseye Twice?

Recorded LIVE on July 11, 2022

Our culture has generally tended to solve its problems without experiencing its questions. -Socrates

Double Dart: are you hitting the bullseye twice, or pinning your own feet to the floor? Is how you are showing up helping for the good of all?

May you get what you truly want and want it when you truly get it!

However, when what we want is not, in fact, what is happening, we need the skill of turning “it” on and turning “it” off.

What are questions we can trust, that put us in a leadership/destiny mind set on the Judgement Train so we can move past a short-term/destination mindset!

Trust the art of intention: the CALMER approach - speed up to slow down.

Give yourself time to make a shift.
Get-it-done- by taking a step back.

    • Am I proud of what I have chosen to do?
    • Who is coming with me on my journey?
    • What will I be doing when I get there?
    • How can I give my best and yet not my all?

Balance is when to, not how to: renew, regenerate, heal, embrace, and repeat consistently.

Recorded LIVE on July 25, 2022

The Change Zone welcomes special guest Mary Stevenson into our next episode July 25, 2022. The title is “Whole Harmonized Healing – Heal yourself – Heal your pet!”

It’s uncanny how our pets will sense something isn’t right with us even before we do!  If only we could talk to the animals.

Actually, Canada’s foremost animal empath, Mary Stevenson can.

Combining over 25 years of experience with her training as a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, and animal communicator; Mary uses her extraordinary intuitive healing gifts to go right to the source of what’s causing your pet’s illness or unusual behaviour.

Often she finds that the problem lies within you!  Because of the deep human-animal connection, anything out of balance within us directly affects our pets.  What we interpret as something amiss with our animal can be, in reality, their attempt to mirror our issues and thereby, communicate a valuable message.  Without our four legged best friends, we might not even realize difficulties exist!

By helping people to discover and release the debilitating, deep-seated, emotional blockages that are holding them back, Mary enables her human clients to finally move forward towards achieving their goals and living their own best life.

So, in essence, heal yourself, heal your pet!

  • Photo of Mac Bogert from the chest up

    Episode 42 - Humanity@Work with Mac Bogert!

    Recorded LIVE September 26, 2022

The Change Zone credits this compelling, relatable, real, and relevant storyteller, with embodying change - the kinds of changes that make a difference aimed at the heart of our workplaces.

Mac notes “I have happily let the next thing draw my path, from teaching through touring as a blues performer, sailing professionally, acting, puppeteering, and back to teaching. All of these are still active themes in what I am becoming every day. “My friend Bruce introduces me as - the oldest kid I know.”

In this episode we will be exploring our common passions of learning, language, and leadership.

    Who is Mac Bogert?

Mac Bogert fell in love with learning, language, and leadership through the intervention of two professors— (he had actually achieved a negative GPA)—who kicked his butt through Washington and Lee University. After graduate school at University of Virginia, he started teaching English at a large high school in northern Virginia. “A terrific principal lit my fire, a terrible one extinguished it.”

He left after five years (the national average, as it turns out.) “Maybe the only time I did something normal” and started an original folk/blues/rock band. That went well for a time until the record company sponsoring them folded. He toured for some years as an acoustic blues musician, primarily as an opening act for bands like the Muddy Waters Band, Doc, and Merle Watson and such remarkable talent. As that market dried up (disco), Mac earned his Coast Guard Masters License and worked for the next decade as a charter and delivery captain and sailing instructor. At the same time, he was working part-time as an actor and voice-over artist, selling inflatable boats and encyclopedias, and working as a puppeteer. “Itchy feet, I suppose.”

Mac Bogert came back into the system in 1987 as a teacher specialist in health and drug education in his county school system, also part-time as Education Coordinator (and faculty member) for Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

He “departed” both jobs in 1994 (therein lie more stories) and started his own business. AzaLearning is the career he’d been dodging for decades: serving 200 clients around the country, helping with all kinds of coaching, planning, transforming conflict, creative problem-solving, communication, and mediation. He also trained and worked as a community mediator somewhere during sailing and teaching) learning, language, and leadership.

In 2016 he published Learning Chaos: How Disorder Can Save Education, in 2022 - Humanity@Work, and hosts the podcast - back2different.

Kyle Grey came into The Change Zone In March 2022 and shared his holistic approach focusing on 3 pillars of Fitness, Nutrition and Mental conditioning.
